What was a special volunteering experience that left a lasting impression on you?
One of my best volunteer experiences was being a mentor for my mentee, who was new to Germany. His goal was to learn German, make friends and later become a bus driver.
He was uncertain at first, but together we practiced a lot — from everyday conversations to job-specific vocabulary. I'll never forget how proud he was the first time he confidently asked for directions.
Over time, he became more confident, made contacts and finally took the first step towards bus driver training. It was unbelievable to see him achieve his goals and showed me how valuable mentoring can be.
Why do you believe in volunteering and how has it perhaps also changed your perspectives?
I believe in the power of volunteering because it creates real connections and reminds us how much we can impact others' lives. It's not just about giving time — it's about building bridges, fostering understanding, and opening your heart.
I had my first volunteer experience in elementary school, when we visited an old people's home every Friday with afternoon care.
There I met “my grandma,” a resident with whom I got on particularly well. I continued to visit them regularly even after elementary school. Our discussions and hours spent together showed me early on how valuable time and attention are.
Volunteering has been with me ever since, and every experience — whether in mentoring or other engagements — has shown me that community thrives on being there for each other.
